Services
The CGIBD Histology Core provides a full range of histology services including routine and specialized grossing, tissue processing, paraffin embedding, serial and skip paraffin sectioning, H&E and special staining, slide scanning*, and immunohistochemistry* to CGBID members and non-members alike. Samples can be dropped off directly at the core, located at 030 Glaxo, in the drop off bin located outside the lab. Work requests must be submitted through iLabs, and must be submitted before the samples can be processed, embedded, sectioned, or stained. Additionally before services purchased are completed, it is required that a document listing the Sample ID’s, tissue type, and other important information is attached to the iLabs order. Typical turn-around time for the lab is 5-10 business days, however, rush ordering is available at an additional cost.

Hematoxylin & Eosin staining (H&E) is widely used for routine examination of tissue structures found within a sample by highlighting the nucleic acids found within the sample. This staining technique is useful for diagnosis and quality control of processed tissue specimens in the lab.
Special stains such as Trichrome, Alcian Blue, Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Oil Red O, and Toluidine Blue are also available to detect, visualize, and evaluate particular tissue structures within a given sample. We offer additional special stains outside of what is listed upon request. Please note, that these stains can vary in cost due to complexity and reagent cost.

Mason’s Trichrome Staining
Staining of sectioned paraffin embedded tissue to identify collagen within cellular structures. Required additional services include tissue processing, embedding and sectioning prior to Mason’s Trichrome staining.

**We have an open collaboration which includes slide scanning, automated scoring and Immunohistochemistry being provided in collaboration with the UNC Pathology Services Core (PSC). Digitized images can be accessed through a secure website. The investigators will have access to Aperio Imagescope software for annotation and scoring of images. Scanned images in the Spectrum Plus database can be shared with colleagues and viewed simultaneously. Investigators can request full (edit and annotate) or read only (read only) access for collaborators and others.
